Novice Teachers

I am surprised to find the lack of support and/or professional development for novice teachers. Unfortunately, at the school I teach there is no policy written for the mentoring program of first year teachers. There seems to be a "hands off" approach from the administrations towards the entire process with no written rules, boundaries, or guidelines set. With statistics showing that there are a large percentage of teachers leaving the education field within five years, I would think that there would be more of an emphasis on aiding novice teachers. Programs do differ from school district to school district from being proactive to nonexistent. I just wish there was a better preparation program on a state level.

Yes, our school has nothing written either about first year teachers, however, they used to have first year teacher meetings once a month to talk about different issues a first year teacher experiences. This was wiped away though when a new principal came in. The reasons aren't clear why this happened. I think that they were very useful, even though there were plenty of times that I didn't want to stay until 4 o'clock.

I totally agree! My first year of teaching I had coaches and mentors that were suppose to be there for support, but I found that I did better on my own. It is really a matter of trial and error, and of course I had friends in the field with a few tips.
